Plastic Wastes

Global plastic consumption has gone from 5.5 million tons in the 1950s to 110 million tons in 2009. Plastic production is estimated to use 8% of yearly global oil production. According to US EPA data shows that proper plastic recycling rate is less than 11% in 2010.  Americans throw away 35 billion plastic water bottles every year. Canadians take home an estimated 2.86 billion plastic bags each year. In Ontario, 55% of recyclable waste goes to landfills.

Plastic Pollution

We don’t see it; it doesn’t mean it is not there! Plastic takes 500-1000 years for plastic to degrade in the landfills. There is a huge folding plastic batch in the middle of the Pacific Ocean that is a size of twice of Texas. Over million seabirds and marine animals are killed annually from plastic in our oceans.
